Notes on de Vesselitsky
Vesselitsky or de Wesselitsky in the German form, continued in use as
a surname until 1931, with the surname being changed to Merriman, a
translation of de Vesselitsky to accommodate the education of
Gabriel and Michael at Dover college as the school was getting
objections from other parents to their sons being educated alongside
boys of Russian name or extract, so Gabriel and Michael were taken to
London to have their surname name changed by deed pole to Merriman,
with the advice that de Vesselitsky could still be used as a middle
name.
